“He was clearly feeling down when he arrived for the session and his mood didn’t seem to lift, and it was clearly due to his love life once again. When somebody tried to cheer him up, he snapped. Standing sharply from his chair at the sound console, he shouted at the room and directed his comments towards Brian, Roger and John: ‘It’s okay for all of you - you have your wives and families - I can never be happy!’ Apart from the initial shock, I thought it was a terribly sad thing to say and I felt for him tremendously.”
